Empowering Student Leaders: A Successful Orientation for SRC Executives
In our quest to foster a supportive and inclusive campus community, the guidance and counselling unit organized an orientation program for the newly elected Student Representative Council (SRC) executives. This dynamic event aimed to equip these student leaders with the necessary knowledge, skills, and support to effectively fulfill their roles and make a positive impact on the student body.
Great leaders are not born overnight; they are developed through continuous learning and growth. The orientation kicked off with a warm welcome from the Principal of the College, Dr. Samuel Addae-Boateng to the SRC executives, setting the stage for an engaging and empowering experience. To lay a strong foundation, Dr. Samuel Addae-Boateng provided a comprehensive overview of the SRC’s purpose and structure. By emphasizing the SRC’s role as a representative body for the student community, He instilled in the executives a sense of responsibility and the importance of their positions. Finally, he highlighted the significance of their voices in advocating for student rights, concerns, and improvements within the campus environment.
Each executive position within the SRC carries unique responsibilities and authority. During the orientation, all the facilitators delved into the specifics of each role, elucidating the expectations and duties associated with them. This session was essential in ensuring that the SRC executives fully understood their individual responsibilities while embracing the collective responsibility of serving the student community.
A fundamental aspect of effective student representation is a deep understanding of the student body’s diverse needs, challenges, and aspirations. The team of facilitators engaged the SRC executives in interactive discussions and activities that fostered empathy and awareness. By sharing relevant demographic information and discussing common issues faced by students, and encouraged the executives to approach their roles with compassion and a student-centered mindset.
Communication and collaboration form the bedrock of successful leadership. Ms. Bridget Adade, the Public Relations Officer of the College explained the need to enhancing these crucial skills. Through team-building exercises, workshops, and discussions, She exposed the environment where the SRC executives could learn to communicate effectively, resolve conflicts amicably, and foster a sense of unity within the council. These skills will enable them to work cohesively and advocate effectively on behalf of the student community.
The orientation included workshops and sessions focused on cultivating leadership skills. SRC executives were exposed to decision-making techniques, problem-solving strategies, public speaking tips, and time management principles. Equipped with these skills, they will be better prepared to navigate the challenges they may encounter during their term.
Navigating the intricacies of policies and procedures is essential for any student leader. Mr. David Adombila, the Dean of students Affairs provided an overview of the relevant policies, rules, and procedures governing the SRC. The executives gained a thorough understanding of the SRC constitution or bylaws, as well as any university or school regulations that they need to adhere to. This knowledge ensures that their actions are within the prescribed boundaries, promoting responsible leadership.
